I love seeing Large Munsterlanders in my clinic because they are such energetic and friendly companions. Their long coats and eager eyes make them wonderful pets, but as a veterinarian, I also know they have specific breed vulnerabilities we must watch.

Throughout my years of practice, I have treated many of these dogs for joint and skin issues. I want to share my knowledge with you so you can spot the warning signs early and provide the best possible care for your furry friend.

Orthopedic Health and Joint Issues

This breed frequently suffers from hip and elbow dysplasia, which can cause painful arthritis later in life. I recommend you feed your dog a balanced diet to prevent obesity, as excess weight puts unnecessary stress on their joints. Low impact exercise like swimming is also excellent for maintaining muscle strength.

Hereditary Eye Conditions

Large Munsterlanders are prone to entropion, where the eyelid rolls inward, and progressive retinal atrophy. You should look for signs of eye irritation, excessive tearing, or cloudy pupils during your daily grooming routines. Early surgical intervention for entropion can prevent corneal scarring and permanent vision loss.

Ear Infections and Skin Allergies

Their floppy ears trap moisture, creating a perfect environment for bacterial and yeast infections to flourish. Check their ears weekly for a bad odor or redness and clean them gently with a veterinarian approved solution. Skin allergies can also cause persistent itching, which requires dietary management or medication to control.

Step by Step

1

Check Hips

Schedule annual x-rays to monitor the development of their hip joints.

2

Eye Tests

Have a certified veterinary ophthalmologist examine your dog’s eyes annually.

3

Clean Ears

Wipe the inside of their ears with a soft damp cloth after swimming.

4

Watch Weight

Weigh your dog monthly to ensure they stay within a healthy range.

5

Monitor Gait

Watch for limping or reluctance to climb stairs, which signals pain.

What you need to know

The Large Munsterlander is an athletic gundog and is fairly sound overall, but hip dysplasia is the main hereditary concern and can cause stiffness or reluctance to work. As an active dog it is also prone to soft tissue injuries, torn pads, and ear infections, since the long pendulous ears trap moisture, especially after swimming.

Some lines report eye conditions, so health tested parents are worth seeking. These dogs need plenty of exercise and mental work, and an under exercised Munsterlander often becomes restless rather than ill. Dry the ears after wet outings, check the feet and coat for grass seeds and ticks, and keep weight lean to protect the hips. Persistent limping, head shaking, or ear odour should prompt a vet visit.
