Our Testing Methodology
How we test, score, and recommend pet products. Every review is written by a credentialed expert whose specialization matches the product category.
The fundamentals
- Real pets, real time. Every product is tested for a minimum of 4 weeks with a pet in the relevant species, age range, and size class. We document intake patterns, behavioral responses, and any adverse reactions.
- Credentialed reviewers only. Each review is written by a licensed or certified professional: DVM, Veterinary Nutritionist (ACVN), CPDT-KA, or CAAB. Reviewer credentials are listed on every page.
- No paid placements. We accept no payment from manufacturers to feature or rate products. Products are purchased at retail or received without obligation and returned or donated after testing.
- Safety standards verified. Before publishing, we confirm the product meets the relevant AAFCO, AVMA, ASPCA, FDA-CVM, or CPSC standard where applicable.
- FDA recall check on every food review. We search the FDA Animal Veterinary recall database before every food, treat, or supplement review and re-check before every refresh.
- Species-specificity confirmed. We never recommend a product across species without confirming it is safe for each. Flea/tick and health products receive explicit species compatibility verification.
Scoring system
Each review uses a 5-section scorecard rated on a 0-10 scale. Sections vary by category but always include Value for Money, Build Quality, Ease of Use, Pet Enjoyment, and Safety. We do not score sections we have not tested directly. Section averages produce the overall rating shown at the top of each review.
By category
Dog and cat food / small animal food
Reviewer: Dr. Marcus Chen, DVM, Board-Certified Veterinary Nutritionist. We verify the AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement, check the ingredient list against known problematic additives, cross-reference the FDA Animal Veterinary recall database, and evaluate palatability across at least 3 animals over 4 weeks. For food marked "YMYL" (higher safety impact), sources minimum 2 authoritative citations (AAFCO, FDA-CVM, AVMA).
Exercise wheels and enrichment toys
Reviewer: Dr. James Obi, PhD, CAAB. We evaluate wheel diameter against species-specific spinal alignment requirements, test noise output under real running conditions, track nightly use duration across minimum 3 animals, and assess material safety including absence of sharp edges and non-toxic coatings.
Habitats and bedding
Reviewer: Dr. James Obi, PhD, CAAB. We assess floor space against minimum welfare guidelines, test burrowing depth for burrowing species, measure dust production, evaluate escape-resistance on all latches and gaps, and log substrate depth maintenance over a 4-week period.
Health products, supplements, and flea/tick treatments
Reviewer: Dr. Sarah Kim, DVM, DACVIM. We verify species and weight appropriateness, check for contraindications with common concurrent medications, confirm active ingredients against ASPCA Poison Control databases, and require a safetyNote field on every review in this category. YMYL-strict: all safety claims require a named authoritative source.
Harnesses, leashes, and collars
Reviewer: Lisa Park, CPDT-KA, Fear Free Certified Trainer. We test fit across a range of body shapes for the species, evaluate escape-resistance under realistic movement conditions, assess hardware durability after simulated extended use, and evaluate the stress response of the animal during harness application and wear.
Hay and forage products
Reviewer: Dr. Marcus Chen, DVM, Veterinary Nutritionist. We assess cut type, leaf-to-stem ratio, dust levels, color and scent consistency across multiple bags, palatability across at least 3 animals, and effect on stool output as a proxy for gut motility. Minimum 4 bag purchases over 4 weeks.
