Midsize dogs are the sweet spot for car travel and the worst for your upholstery, big enough to shed, scratch, and haul in mud, but small enough that they ride in the back seat or hatch rather than a dedicated crate. This category is all about protecting the car while keeping the dog stable. We looked at the gear owners of forty to sixty pound dogs actually use: hammock-style seat covers that drape between front and back seats, SUV cargo liners for the boot, and back-seat extenders that turn the footwell into a flat platform. The features that separate good from useless are waterproofing that actually stops a wet dog soaking through, anchors and seat straps that hold the cover taut instead of sliding into a heap, and a non-slip backing so the whole thing does not migrate every time your dog shifts. A hammock design also stops a dog tumbling into the footwell on hard braking. Measure your seat or cargo area before buying, since fit varies a lot between sedans and SUVs.
