Pilling a cat by hand is one of the harder tasks in pet care, and a fingertip near a cat’s mouth is an easy target for a defensive bite. A pill dispenser, also called a piller or pill shooter, places the tablet at the back of the tongue from a safe distance. We compared five popular pillers focusing on tip softness, reliable release, and grip. In our evaluation we found that a soft, flexible tip is the most important feature, because it is gentle on a cat’s mouth and far less likely to cause injury if the cat jerks. An anti-drop or secure-hold design keeps the pill in place until you press the plunger, which prevents the embarrassing miss that ends with the tablet on the floor. Used calmly and correctly these tools make medicating much easier. If your cat consistently refuses pills or you are unsure of technique, ask your veterinarian to demonstrate, since stress and missed doses are common.
