Tap water carries minerals, chlorine, and contaminants that can throw off a carefully balanced aquarium, so many hobbyists turn to reverse osmosis systems for clean source water. We evaluated RO and RO/DI units on the things that matter to aquarists: how many filtration stages they run, how pure the output is, and how practical they are to set up and maintain at home. In our evaluation we found stage count and the presence of a deionization stage drive the purity you can reach, which matters most for reef and sensitive species tanks. We recommend matching the system to your livestock: a reef or shrimp tank benefits from RO/DI purity, while a hardy freshwater setup may not need it. Always test your output water and reintroduce appropriate minerals where needed. For sensitive or specialized species, follow established care guidance and consult an aquatic specialist before major water-chemistry changes.
