Ferrets are active, playful, and rough on everything in the cage, which makes a flimsy water bottle a short-lived purchase. They also drink a fair amount, so a tiny hamster bottle does not cut it. We targeted larger bottles around 26 ounces with chew-resistant bodies and leak-proof nozzles, since a ferret will bat, climb, and gnaw at whatever is mounted on the bars. We filled and mounted each one, watched for drips, and checked that the valve flowed freely and the mount held when knocked. A dripping bottle soaks the cage and a weak bracket ends up on the cage floor by morning. The smart move is a chew-proof bottle with a secure heavy mount, positioned where your ferret cannot pry the plastic loose. Many ferret owners also offer a tip-resistant bowl, since some ferrets prefer to lap. Clean the nozzle every few days, check the water twice daily, and keep a backup source in case the valve sticks during play.
