Stacking tanks in a rack can save a ton of floor space, especially if you keep multiple reptiles, amphibians, or fish. But one wrong move, and you could end up with a cracked tank, a flooded room, or worse, an injured pet. The good news is that with the right planning and a few solid rules, you can build a rack that’s both space-efficient and rock-solid. 1. Know Your Tank Weight: It’s Not Just the Glass

Before you even look at racks, you need to calculate the total weight of each tank when fully set up. A 40-gallon breeder tank filled with water weighs around 460 pounds, but a 40-gallon terrarium with dry substrate and decor might only weigh 200 pounds. The difference matters because your rack’s shelves must handle the heaviest possible load. Use this simple formula: tank weight (empty) + substrate or water weight (8.34 pounds per gallon for water, less for dry soil) + decor weight. Write it down for each tank.
