A chicken dust bath is not a luxury, it is core preventive care. Chickens have no natural way to wash, so they roll in fine, dry dust to coat their feathers and skin, which smothers external parasites like mites, lice and scaly leg mites while absorbing excess oils. In my clinical experience, flocks with consistent access to a quality dust bath show dramatically fewer parasite infestations and far less feather damage than those without.

When choosing a dust bath, focus on two things: the dusting medium and the container. The medium should be ultra-fine and dry, typically a blend of dry soil, sand, wood ash and food-grade diatomaceous earth or dried herbs. Avoid anything damp, clumping or heavily fragranced. The container should be wide enough for a hen to fully squat and flick dust over her back, with drainage or easy-clean surfaces so the contents stay dry and sanitary year-round.
