Choosing the right chinchilla cage is one of the most important husbandry decisions you will make, because these long-lived rodents spend nearly their entire day inside it. As a veterinarian, I see far more health problems traced back to poor housing, overheating, sore feet, and chewed plastic, than to almost any other cause. The right enclosure supports natural climbing behavior, keeps your chinchilla cool, and resists constant gnawing for years.
When shopping, prioritize height over floor space, narrow bar spacing of half an inch or less, and all-metal construction with solid or coated shelves. Good ventilation is non-negotiable since chinchillas cannot tolerate heat, and a removable tray plus locking casters make daily care far easier. Match the cage size to how many chinchillas you keep, and always be ready to swap out any plastic parts.
