Guinea pigs have open-rooted teeth that grow continuously throughout their lives, which means daily chewing is not a luxury but a medical necessity. Without appropriate chew toys, cavies are prone to malocclusion, painful overgrown molars, and the boredom-driven behaviors I see far too often in my clinic, including bar-biting and barbering. A good toy set gives them a safe outlet for this instinct while enriching an otherwise sedentary cage life.
When choosing toys, the materials matter more than the marketing. Look for untreated, pesticide-free hardwoods such as apple, pear, or other fruit woods, plus natural grasses like Timothy hay woven into balls or mats. Avoid anything painted, glued with toxic adhesives, or made from softwoods like cedar and pine, which release harmful oils. Variety in texture and shape keeps guinea pigs engaged and encourages the full range of chewing they need.
