As a veterinarian who treats small mammals, I tell every hamster owner the same thing: bedding is not just decoration, it is a daily health input. Hamsters spend most of their lives in their substrate, burrowing, nesting and grooming, so the wrong material can trigger respiratory irritation, skin problems or wet-tail flare-ups. The right bedding wicks moisture away, traps ammonia odor, stays dust-free and is deep enough for natural tunneling behavior.
When choosing bedding, prioritize unscented, paper-based or aspen products over pine and cedar shavings, which release aromatic oils that can harm a hamsterโs sensitive airways. Look for high absorbency, low dust, and enough volume to create a burrow layer of at least four to six inches. Avoid anything fluffy and cotton-like that can wrap around tiny limbs or cause intestinal blockage if eaten. Good bedding keeps the enclosure drier, cleaner and far less smelly between changes.
