Tap water carries chlorine, nitrates, phosphates, and minerals that can stress sensitive fish and fuel algae, which is why many aquarists rely on a reverse osmosis system to produce clean, consistent water. In our evaluation we compared RO and RO/DI systems on filtration stages, certification, daily output, and how easy each is to install and maintain for tank use. What we like is a system whose stage count and membrane suit your tank type, with reliable output and accessible replacement filters. We assessed NSF and ANSI certifications, alkaline or remineralization stages, and tankless versus tank designs. For reef and sensitive freshwater tanks you will often want to remineralize RO water before use, so we recommend testing your output with a TDS meter and matching the parameters to your livestock. When in doubt about water chemistry for delicate species, consult an experienced aquatic specialist.
