Chinchillas and degus are strict herbivores with delicate digestive systems, and that single fact should drive every treat you put in the cage. Their gut is built for tough, high-fiber forage like hay and dried grasses, not the fruit, seeds, or sugary pellets that show up in a lot of small-animal treat bags. Degus in particular are prone to diabetes, so sugar is not a minor issue for them, it is a real health risk. We went through the popular treat blends and sorted them by fiber content and sugar load. Plain dried herbs, leaves, rose hips, and hibiscus flowers came out on top because they add variety and chewing without a sugar spike. Apple-wood sticks earn a spot too, since gnawing wears down continuously growing teeth, though they are more chew toy than food. The fruit-heavy and seed-loaded mixes are the ones we either skip or pick out the safe pieces from. Whatever you choose, treats should be tiny and occasional, roughly one small piece a day at most. When in doubt about a plant, check ASPCA care resources before offering it.
