What matters most under 50

For small birds the bar spacing is the safety number that matters most. Keep it under half an inch for finches and budgies so heads and feet cannot get trapped, and choose horizontal bars on at least one side because small parrots climb and exercise against them more than they fly in a compact cage.

Make the modest footprint work harder with smart fittings rather than extra size. A slide out tray, two or three well placed perches of varying diameter, and secure feeder cups deliver more daily welfare than a slightly bigger but barren box. Avoid round cages, which give birds no corner to feel secure in.
