Many owners assume that providing a nest box is enough to trigger breeding in zebra finches. In reality, these birds need specific environmental cues, such as long daylight hours and a protein-rich diet, to enter breeding condition. Once the nest is ready, the female lays one egg per day, usually in the morning, until a clutch of 4 to 6 eggs is complete. Incubation begins with the last egg. Both parents share incubation duties, with the male sitting during the day and the female at night. Eggs hatch after 12 to 15 days.
Rearing Chicks and Fledging
Zebra finch chicks are altricial, born naked and blind. Both parents feed them regurgitated seeds and, importantly, crop milk a nutritious secretion from the crop lining. The chicks grow rapidly and open their eyes around day 5. They develop a full feather coat by day 14.
Fledging occurs between 17 and 21 days after hatching. Chicks leave the nest but continue to be fed by parents for another two weeks. During this time, provide ample calcium and protein sources to support the parents’ demanding feeding schedule.
Environmental Triggers for Breeding
In captivity, zebra finches breed readily when provided with long days (14 to 16 hours of light), mild temperatures (65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit), and a high protein diet. Reducing daylight hours to 10 hours can suppress breeding and give birds a necessary rest period.
Do not provide nest boxes year round. After a breeding cycle, remove the nest box and allow the birds to rest for at least 3 months. This prevents exhaustion, egg binding, and other reproductive health issues.
Common Health Concerns During Breeding
Egg binding is a serious risk, especially in first time or overbred females. Signs include a fluffed appearance, straining, or a swollen abdomen. Immediate veterinary care is required. Ensure females receive cuttlebone and a calcium supplement to support eggshell formation.
Another issue is chronic egg laying, where a female lays clutch after clutch without rest. This can lead to calcium depletion and death. If this occurs, remove the nest box, reduce daylight, and ensure a balanced diet. Consult an avian veterinarian if the behavior persists.
