Overview

Despite its untamed appearance, the Ocicat is a completely domestic breed created from Abyssinian, Siamese and American Shorthair crosses. These cats are outgoing, confident and people-oriented, often greeting visitors at the door and following their owners from room to room. Highly intelligent and athletic, they readily learn tricks, walk on a leash and play fetch. Their short, sleek coat needs almost no grooming, making them an easy-care choice for active households.

History and Origin

The Ocicat was created accidentally in 1964 by breeder Virginia Daly of Michigan, who was attempting to produce an Abyssinian-pointed Siamese. An unexpected spotted kitten named Tonga appeared in the litter, and Daly's daughter dubbed it an ocicat for its resemblance to the wild ocelot. American Shorthair was later added to the breeding program, introducing the silver color and increasing the cat's bone and body size. CFA granted the Ocicat championship status in 1987, and the breed is now recognized by TICA and other registries worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Ocicat a good family cat?

Yes. Ocicats are exceptionally social, gentle and playful, and they generally do very well with children, other cats and even dogs. Their confident, dog-like nature makes them devoted family companions that enjoy being part of the action.

How much does a Ocicat cost?

A purebred Ocicat kitten from a reputable breeder typically costs between 800 and 1500 USD, depending on lineage, color and breeder reputation. Show-quality or rare-colored kittens can cost more.

Do Ocicat cats shed a lot?

No. The Ocicat has a short, tight, satiny coat that sheds minimally and needs only occasional brushing or a wipe-down with a chamois to keep it gleaming. They are one of the lowest-maintenance breeds for grooming.

How long do Ocicat cats live?

Ocicats are generally healthy and typically live 12 to 18 years. Good nutrition, regular veterinary care and dental hygiene help them reach the upper end of that range.

Are Ocicat cats high maintenance?

Grooming-wise they are very low maintenance, but they are high energy and crave attention. They need plenty of play, mental stimulation and companionship, so they are not ideal for owners who are away from home for long stretches.

Final Verdict

The Ocicat is a great choice for owners of all experience levels. With a lifespan of 12-18 years, very high energy, and velcro cat affection, it suits families seeking a playful, social cat.
