Overview

The Selkirk Rex is a sturdy, well-rounded cat with a distinctive curly coat that comes in both longhair and shorthair versions. Unlike the tight, lying-flat curls of the Cornish or Devon Rex, the Selkirk's curls are loose, soft and unstructured, giving the cat a slightly tousled, plush appearance. Temperamentally, the breed is calm, patient and very affectionate, happily tolerating handling and seeking out human company. These traits make it an excellent companion for families, seniors and multi-pet households alike.

History and Origin

The Selkirk Rex began in 1987 in Montana when a curly-coated kitten named Miss DePesto was born in a litter of an otherwise normal-coated rescue cat. Breeder Jeri Newman acquired the kitten and bred her to a black Persian, producing more curly kittens and confirming the curl was caused by a dominant gene. The breed was named after Newman's stepfather, Selkirk, making it one of the few cat breeds named after a person. It gained championship recognition from TICA in 1994 and from the CFA in 2000, with Persians, Exotics, British Shorthairs and American Shorthairs used in its development.
