Fish Stocking Calculator: How Many Fish in Your Tank
Estimate a safe number of fish for your tank size, with stocking cautions.
--
How stocking is estimated
This uses the classic starting rule of about one inch of adult fish per gallon, based on adult size (not the size at purchase). It is a rough guide. Heavily built fish, messy species like goldfish, and territorial fish need much more space.
Important: The inch-per-gallon rule does not work for large or messy fish. Goldfish, cichlids, and plecos need far more space. Always research each species.
How to use it
- Enter your real water volume in gallons.
- Use the adult length of the species, not the small size in the store.
- Treat the result as a maximum, and stock gradually.
Stocking tips
- Cycle the tank before adding fish.
- Add fish a few at a time so the filter can keep up.
- Understock rather than overstock for healthier water.
Frequently asked questions
- How many fish can I put in my tank?
- A rough start is one inch of adult fish per gallon, but big or messy species need much more room.
- Does the inch-per-gallon rule always work?
- No. It fails for goldfish, cichlids, and large fish. Research each species' real needs.
- Should I add all fish at once?
- No, add a few at a time so the beneficial bacteria can handle the waste load.
- Is it better to understock?
- Yes, fewer fish means more stable water and healthier fish.
