A crate has two jobs. It has to keep your dog secure and comfortable, and increasingly owners want it to look like furniture rather than a wire box in the corner. We compared a set of nice-looking crates by weighing each against the manufacturer’s listed dimensions, the materials and door hardware, and what owners reported about stability and chew resistance. In our evaluation we found a clear trade-off. Wooden crate furniture wins on looks and doubles as a side table or end table, but it asks more of your dog’s house-training and chew habits. Traditional wire crates are easier to clean and more escape-resistant for strong or anxious dogs. We recommend deciding which matters more for your household before you choose, and we always size up to the dog’s adult standing and turning room.
