Dogs that pace during thunderstorms, bark at every hallway sound, or struggle when left alone can often benefit from steady background noise that masks startling triggers. We looked at five sound machines, some made specifically for pets and some adapted from baby and sleep products, and judged them on how well they hold a calm, consistent soundscape. In our evaluation we found that the details matter more than the marketing. Non-looping sound libraries avoid the abrupt restart that can re-alert a sensitive dog, and fine volume control lets you set a masking level without overwhelming sharp canine hearing. A sound machine is an environmental aid, not a cure for anxiety, so for dogs with severe separation distress we recommend pairing it with a behavior plan from your veterinarian or a certified behaviorist.
