A puzzle toy is one of the best ways to tire out a puppy’s brain, which often calms the chewing and barking that come from boredom. But puppies need the right kind of puzzle, so we tested treat-dispensing toys, snuffle mats, and multi-piece enrichment sets with young dogs specifically in mind. Difficulty progression mattered most, since a puzzle that is too hard frustrates a puppy and one that is too easy gets ignored within a day. We looked for toys that start simple and scale up. Safety came next, because puppies chew everything, so we checked for small removable parts that could be swallowed and watched how each held up to mouthing. A snuffle mat with loose strands or a puzzle with tiny pegs is a choking and ingestion risk for a determined pup. We also checked how easily each cleaned, since treat residue builds up fast. Supervise puzzle play, especially at first, and put the toy away once the puppy starts chewing the puzzle itself rather than working it.
