In our evaluation we found that the best small robot dogs match their complexity to the intended age and deliver responsive, reliable controls. We recommend checking the age range, the control method, and whether the toy needs charging or replaceable batteries before buying. What we like are robot dogs with expressive feedback, intuitive remote or programmable controls, and sturdy construction that handles a child’s enthusiasm. For younger kids we favor simpler, more durable models; for older kids we like programmable features that grow with their interest.
