Keeping fresh water available matters for kidney and urinary health, and the dispenser you choose mostly affects how clean that water stays. We ran gravity dispensers and circulating fountains over multiple days, watching how quickly slime built up and how much effort it took to scrub each one back to clean. Gravity dispensers are simple and refill a large bowl automatically, which suits dogs that drink a lot, but the bowl still needs daily rinsing. Circulating fountains keep water moving and often tempt fussy cats to drink more, though the pump and filter add parts that need regular cleaning. Stainless steel resists biofilm and odor far better than plastic, which scratches and harbors bacteria. Capacity should match how long you are away, but never use a big reservoir as an excuse to skip cleaning. Wash the bowl and reservoir often and replace filters on schedule. Provide a backup water source in case a pump fails.
